The Legend Of The Sallie House (The Heartland Ghost)

The Mystery Of The Tesla Death Ray

Imagine a beam of energy that could bring down planes from miles away using nothing but electricity. How about an invisible wall that could protect a country from invasion? That the moment enemy soldiers cross the barrier, they’re vaporized instantly. Sounds like something most militaries would love to get their hands on, doesn’t it? It also sounds like something straight out of a movie or videogame.

But the concept of a death ray isn’t just the stuff of science fiction. It may have actually been invented.

Nikola Tesla, one of the most brilliant minds the world has ever seen was born in what is now Croatia in 1856 where he received an education in engineering before immigrating to the United States. There he got a job working for Thomas Edison before breaking out on his own venture as an inventor.

Many of Tesla’s inventions in this period were revolutionary. And while he primarily focused on improving systems for generating electric power and transmitting electric currents. He additionally made innovations in the field of radio technology.

Tesla’s biggest dream was to find a way to beam limitless power directly through the air. And over the course of his life, he managed to develop a number of devices that could transmit electric energy wirelessly. But sadly, a lack of funding limited his research.

However, in 1934 Tesla claimed that his research had resulted in an incredible new discovery. A device that could kill from miles away using electricity.

He called this invention the Teleforce. And according to him, the weapon worked by focusing electric currents along a narrow path which created a ray of electricity that could in theory, shoot a plane out of the sky.

But despite the supposed death ray he had created. Tesla actually was very anti-war. And hoped by gaining funding by selling a weapon, that he could then use the very same technology to create force fields, that when activated would prevent armies from invading countries and end war altogether.

But Tesla’s high-minded dreams were limited by a serious problem, no one was interested in funding the project.
He approached the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union among others. But none offered any money for it.
And of course, it’s hard to build a massive death ray without some cash, which Tesla was now chronically short of.

But one night in 1937, at a meeting at the Yugoslavian Embassy, Tesla told the room that not only was his invention possible but he had already built one. In fact, he would be unveiling it to the world in a matter of months.

Unfortunately later that same year the inventor was struck by a car while crossing the street in New York City and never truly recovered. He passed away shortly after, nearly penniless in the New Yorker hotel where he had been living in 1943.

Tragically or rather fortunately depending on how you look at the situation it seems like if the inventor had made such a weapon, that it never saw the light of day.

Or so it would seem..

The Unnerving Cemetery In Kansas Where Each Headstone Is Just A Number

Asylum Bridge outside of Osawatomie Mental Hospital.

There’s something about this cemetery that sets it apart from others we’ve visited in Kansas in the past. Everyone who wasn’t claimed by families at this mental hospital was buried as just a number. However sad it is, this cemetery in Kansas is equally unnerving.

We do not recommend visiting any cemetery after regular hours of operation, or causing any damage to the cemetery itself. You are in charge of obtaining appropriate permissions for visiting this location.

Osawatomie Mental Hospital

In a time when many men were returning from the Civil War damaged, the “Kansas State Hospital for the Insane” was there to help families and the war-haunted with their problems. The first building here was built in 1860, right after families were legally able to transfer care of a person to a facility such as this. Today, the old hospital building itself is blocked off from the public, and remains a slightly creepy reminder of what once was.

The Cemetery

Over the years, this mental hospital buried many who died, but 346 of them are only marked with a number (in order of death) because they were never claimed by family members and thus had no one to see them off.

Some of the last numbered burials happened in the 1950s, and only two have been replaced by family who wanted their names known at their last resting place.

Names on tombstones, as well as quotes or dates lived, are pieces of life’s puzzle that many visitors to cemeteries read. Throughout this cemetery, you see hundreds of numbers, and it’s almost like playing a game of Guess Who? where you don’t know who lies where. Each stone is a life, but a life unknown and mostly un-remembered.

To think that all of these lives ended while at a mental hospital, away from any family members, is a little heartbreaking. However, it’s also a little unnerving and creepy to think of what they went through and how one is unidentifiable from the next one over.

The Cursed Film “The Exorcist”

“The Exorcist” Film Poster

Few Hollywood films have caused as much controversy as The Exorcist. Its theatrical release in 1973 terrified and outraged audiences with a grotesque tale of possession. But what you might not know about the movie is the supposed curse surrounding it, and what lead the cast and crew to believe in such a thing.

Going Up In Flames

Some crazy things happened during the film’s production. For instance, the set burned down. Everyone was home for the night when the film’s production manager called director William Friedkin and told him not to bother coming into work the next day. Rationally, Friedkin thought he was being fired for some reason, but that wasn’t the case. There wasn’t much of a set to which Friedkin could return.

Everything was torched except for Regan’s possessed bedroom, which remained intact. To be fair, the room was a separate set from the house, but both were near each other, located in the same building. The fire caused production on the film to shut down for six weeks. The official insurance reports claim a pigeon must have flown into an electrical box, short-circuiting the thing and sparking the blaze. That was a stretch; the closest thing to evidence for the theory was that pigeons were present in the building. The production crew must’ve been worried that the film was being assailed by an evil presence, because they called in a priest to bless the set, according to CBS.

Lightening From The Heavens

The weird happenings continued after the film was completed. The initial premiere in Rome provoked something. As the film played in a cinema between two churches, lightning bellowed from the sky and a 400-year-old cross was struck. The cross then collapsed onto the cinema and caused an evacuation!

Several People Died During And After Filming

Hollywood curses typically surround a production that’s plagued by a string of deaths, and The Exorcist’s cast and crew saw plenty of that with the film. At least one of those deaths happened before the movie was finished. In total, according to The Guardian, nine people who were connected to the film died before it was even completed.

The first to die was actor Jack MacGowran, who played the fictional director Burke Dennings. MacGowran didn’t die in real life by having his head twisted like a wind-up crank before being thrown from a window, like his character did. MacGowran died from complications with the flu. According to CBS, the rest of the deaths included everyone from actors to a night watchman to a special effects expert.

The Movie Was Based On A True Story

The story written by author William Peter Blatty was based on a true story of exorcism that took place in St Louis in 1949. Find out more here:

More Than A Coincidence?

It seems like there were too many happenings to call all of the strangeness purely a coincidence. But that’s just our opinion. There are a lot more strange stories of activity that happened on set of the film. Including equipment malfunctions and more.
